Wire Rope & Cable Hardware in an Assembly

In a typical assembly, wire rope hardware is the interface between the cable and the structure. Hardware clamps, thimbles, snap hooks, hooks, pins and turnbuckles control how load flows through or connects to the system and how you set and maintain tension. We select steel cable hardware that matches the cable diameter, construction, material, and environment so the assembly carries load the way it was designed.

Common hardware families used in our cable assemblies include:

  • Wire rope clamps for temporary or adjustable loops
  • Thimbles to protect loops from wear and deformation
  • Turnbuckles and tensioners to set and adjust cable tension
  • Attachment hardware such as eye bolts, tabs, snap hooks, and brackets

Our engineering team treats hardware as another design variable, not an afterthought. That is why we talk about wire rope hardware in the same way we talk about cable size, coating, and end fittings.

Choosing Cable Fittings Hardware for Your Design

Tyler Madison engineers and builds custom cable assemblies that use a wide range of wire rope hardware and cable fittings hardware. We do not sell hardware as a standalone catalog product. Instead, our engineers specify and source cable hardware as part of a complete assembly design so the wire rope, aircraft cable, hardware, and end fittings work together as a system.

The right cable fittings hardware depends on how the assembly is loaded, installed, and adjusted during service. Following are some key considerations:

Load and safety factor

For permanent or critical loads, we usually rely on swaged terminations or engineered end fittings, with hardware used for adjustment or support. Clamps and similar wire hardware are better suited to lighter or temporary loads where inspection and retightening are possible.

Installation method

Hardware-only terminations can be installed in the field with basic tools. Swaged fittings require proper equipment but provide higher strength and a cleaner profile. Many assemblies use a mix of both – engineered fittings at one end and adjustable cable hardware at the other.

Adjustability requirements

If you need to fine tune tension over time, turnbuckles, threaded studs, and tensioners give you a way to adjust the system without replacing cables.

Environment and material

For marine or outdoor applications we generally recommend stainless wire rope hardware and stainless cable, while plated or coated steel cable hardware can be appropriate for indoor and general purpose use.

When we design a custom assembly, we review these factors with you and specify wire rope hardware that fits your application, safety factor, and installation method.

Hardware Inside Real Cable Assemblies

The easiest way to see how cable hardware works is to look at finished assemblies. In many of our wire rope assemblies, end fittings like strap forks, marine eyes, and threaded studs are integrated directly onto the cable. In other cases, wire rope assemblies with terminations such as loops are installed with aircraft cable hardware such as brackets and tabs at the machine.

Photographing and documenting hardware in context also helps engineers and technicians understand how to measure, specify, and replace assemblies in the field.

Engineering Support for Wire Rope Hardware

Tyler Madison has more than 20 years of experience designing and building custom wire rope assemblies. Our process includes:

  • Reviewing the load path and safety factor for the assembly
  • Matching wire rope hardware to cable size, material, and coating
  • Using up to 120 tons of hydraulic swaging force to attach end fittings
  • Pull testing assemblies and verifying that hardware and fittings hold to rated strength

We treat hardware specification as an engineering task. When you send a print, sample, or concept, we identify the cable hardware needed to achieve the function and document it on your assembly drawing.

I was looking for some special ends for a pull cable, but only needed 4 pieces. After trying several companies I found Tyler Madison. Tyler went out of his way to help me out but, unfortunately the ones they carried were too big for my application.
Talking to him further I discovered this is a family owned company that clearly does business the old fashioned way, where customer satisfaction is actually important to them. Unfortunately they didn’t have what I needed this time, but I will gladly call them again in the future, and suggest them to my customers as well.

Great and prompt service.
I’m not a company, just an individual who needed cable ends to rebuild cables on my Weilder Pro 9735 exercise machine. I was not sure they would sell to individuals but they do and I am very pleased with their product. They had the exact stamped fittings I needed and they worked great. Absolutely great service!

Hardware FAQs

What is wire rope and cable hardware?

Cable hardware includes accessories such as clips, thimbles, turnbuckles, shackles, snap hooks, carabiners, eyebolts, nuts, and other components used to attach, tension, guide, or support wire rope and cable assemblies.

Cable clamps vs swaged fittings: which should I use?

Cable clamps are useful for temporary, adjustable, or field-assembled terminations. They are more forgiving to install but are larger and depend on correct torque. Swaged fittings are machine-pressed onto the cable to create compact, permanent terminations that are ideal for production assemblies and critical applications. For most OEM designs, swaged terminations are preferred.

What do turnbuckles and tensioners do in a cable system?

Turnbuckles and tensioners allow you to adjust cable tension after installation. By tightening or loosening the hardware, you can bring cables up to the correct tension, compensate for stretch over time, and fine-tune the alignment of your system.

What materials are available for cable hardware and how do I choose?

Material options include Galvanized and stainless steel cable, and choosing depends on the applications environment. Galvanized hardware offers a good balance of strength, corrosion resistance, and cost for many indoor and general outdoor applications. Stainless steel hardware provides excellent corrosion resistance and is typically the better choice for marine, coastal, chemical, or high-moisture environments. Using hardware that matches your cable and environment will help extend service life.

Can cable hardware be preinstalled on custom cable assemblies?

Yes. We can swage and assemble many hardware components directly onto your custom cable assemblies, then cut, label, and package them to your specifications. This reduces assembly time at your facility and helps ensure consistency from part to part.

What information do you need to recommend the right cable hardware?

To recommend hardware, we need cable diameter and construction, required working load, how and where the assembly will be attached, any space or clearance limits, environmental conditions, and applicable standards or specifications. With that information, we can help you choose hardware that will function correctly and meet your safety requirements.
